When a drink is 'spiked' drugs or alcohol are added without the persons knowledge. Drink spiking is a crime and is generally committed to carry out a sexual assault, rape or theft. Any drug could be used to spike a drink, but the most commonly used are:

gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB)

flunitrazepam (also called rohypnol)

ketamine.

Consequences of a spiked drink

Depending on what has been used to spike the drink the effect can be loss of coordination and balance, vomiting, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, muscle spasms and respiratory difficulties. Inhibitions are lowered and the recipient can act more sexual and flirtatious. All types of drink spiking can be fatal.

It only takes 15 minutes for the effects of ‘rape drugs’ to kick in - they can wipe out eight hours of memory
